HOWS YOUR MORALE’S OFFICIAL, CERTIFIABLY ACCURATE PREDICTION ABOUT IMPEACHMENT
. . . we don’t know.
Anything could. We absolutely have no idea what is going to happen and we predict that anyone who says they know is completely full of it.
Granted, there are guesses that are more educated than others. There are people watching the proceedings with intimate knowledge of the law, and people with long memories of different political eras who are reading, reporting, and investigating the impeachment proceedings.
And none of them know what’s going to happen either.
I’m a bit surprised things have even gotten this far; for a long time I wasn’t sure if the House Democrats were going to try to thread a complicated needle of walk and chew gum at the same time. For a while it seemed like Nancy Pelosi and crew were going to hold off on any sort of action til after the 2020 election, which is no sure thing.
But another part of me — and it seems a still inexplicably large amount of Democrats — figured that with testimonies this damning, and evidence provided by the President himself more Republicans would be jumping ship. Or at least offering more robust defenses of the legal process and legitimacy of the questions. But the collective response seems to be
“I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I”
from the more vocal members of the Republican Party, and complete cowardice from everyone but. . . Mitt Romney. Geez. When Moscow Mitch is the one keeping things to a modicum of normalcy, you know things have gone off the rails.
So we’ll see. The Senate seems to take this more seriously than the house, partly because the Senate has always seen itself as the grown up of legislative bodies. Some seem to think there’s a cadre of Senate Republicans who secretly want to revolt against the President. Some think that we may even lose Democratic votes on it.
Which is to say. Who. Even. Fucking. Knows.
I doubt the Senate will remove President Trump from office.
With that said, I’m so glad that this dramatic, complex story of bribery and self-dealing is being told over the course of the three hectic weeks immediately surrounding Thanksgiving, when everyone can pay attention. It makes so much sense.
I mean, what possible upside is there to dragging out the most significant scandal to befall an incumbent American president in 20 years over the course of the entire year of their reelection campaign?
